Stephanie Deutsche, president of the Capitol Hill Community Center, spoke to the Club about the Center's mission and objectives in supporting community development across Capitol Hill. The Center provides small grants to community organizations from teachers to arts to social services under the theme "Neighbors helping neighbors" encouraging a wide range of community NGO concerns.
Stephanie's motivation in continuing these efforts are in part tied to her great grandfather, Julian Rosenthal, a philanthropist who promoted education for Afro-Americans. Mr. Rosenwald partnered with Booker T. Washington to offer grants for public schools in the South in the early 20th century. Over 5000 schools were built and remained till the end of segregation. Details of his life and effort can be found in Stephanie's book You Need a School House. Thank you for sharing, Stephanie.
