So Others Might Eat (SOME)

The cycle of poverty and homelessness can be broken. SOME’s (So Others Might Eat) comprehensive programs designed to help our most vulnerable neighbors—people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty—find pathways out of poverty and achieve long-term stability and success.

SOME is an interfaith, community-based service organization that exists to help and support residents of our nation’s capital experiencing homelessness and poverty. SOME offers a variety of services, including affordable housing, counseling, addiction treatment, and job training. In addition, SOME helps meet immediate daily needs by providing food, clothing, and healthcare to those in need.

Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

Gretchen Bloom has over 40 years of experience in international development and humanitarian assistance.  She has worked, lived and traveled in 101countries, with a focus on gender issues. Her interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment began when she earned her Master’s degrees in sociology and community health in New Delhi at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

She launched her career as the Coordinator of the AWID (Association for Women’s Rights in Development) Forum in 1985.She worked in the 1990s as the Gender Adviser in the Asia/Near EastBureau of USAID before joining the UN World Food Programme as the Senior Gender Adviser, retiring from WFP in 2003 after 15 months in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Since then, she has consulted as a Gender Expert for WFP, USAID, DFID and the World Bank, recently in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Mozambique and Niger. She visited Bhutan in June 2019 with Dining for Women, her 101st country.

She has also taken up rowing in an eight-oar boat, starting in DC in 1995 and continuing in Italy, where she rowed with Tre Ponti (Three Bridges) and had the opportunity to row in the Venice Long Row (Voga Longa) in 2015. Now she is the coxswain for the Gray Knights Rowing Club in DC.
